Cuppy is a plastic cup that fits on the base of your electric toothbrush charger, where it collects water and calcium to prevent gunky buildup. It comes in a standard version or in any one of a number of thematic or artistic designs. Brighten up your bathroom while you’re cleaning your teeth! It’s discardable and biodegradable, so no mess, no cleaning and no harm to the environment.
The electric toothbrush is an everyday part of many people’s oral hygiene ritual. According to Dr. Alexandra Artisuk, close to 25 per cent of the market already use the electric toothbrush, and the segment is growing.
An electric toothbrush is much more efficient than manual brushing. I’ve been using one for a long time now, and I love it. The only persistent problem I have with it is the water and gunky buildup that forms at the charger’s base. Over time, it crusts up into this disgusting greeny-blue mess that is really hard to remove. And it may interfere with the charging process! No matter how careful you are—and who really has time to wipe their toothbrush after every use—it takes some serious effort to get rid of this gunk.
After a few laborious, chlorine-infused sanitizing sessions, I thought, why not to come up with a clever solution to this sticky problem? I invented and provisionally patented (USPTO-62506016) a discardable water collection cup that sits on top of the charger. It fits newer Oral-B Pro and Oral-B Vitality electric toothbrushes with the round charger base, and it doesn’t interfere with charging. You replace it after a week or so of use with another cup from a 10-cup package. Simple and effective. Below you can see basic floral prototypes and themed renderings.
- plain white
- floral (red tulip, orange gerbera, purple balloon flower)
- thematic (Route 66, Las Vegas, and more to come)
- kid’s version
I named the product “Cuppy,” and it will be branded and marketed under this name.
Cuppy will be recyclable, biodegradable (PLA plastic) and cost-effective to produce. We will outsource manufacturing through MFG.com if the costs to produce Cuppy domestically prove to be prohibitive. Standard manufacturing will be done with a cost-effective mold-injection process. Meanwhile, a 3D printer could also produce more elaborate artistic versions.
Stackable cups will allow for compact product packaging, which will feature a graphic along with easy-to-follow instructions. Several models of Cuppy will be available to fit the most common toothbrush charger configurations.
We believe this product is marketable. In the United States and Canada alone, the market depth is 30 to 50 million potential customers. Cuppy will appeal to millennials as a lifestyle solution to reduce the need for cleaning. It may appeal to dental professionals, who could include Cuppy in their promotional packages— personal touch to build a rapport with patients. It could also be marketed to major electric toothbrush makers, such as Oral-B, to supplement their product lines.
We’re currently at the prototype stage and have developed CAD models and artistic designs for the product:
- developed CAD models of the product – done!
- developed artistic and thematic designs – done!
- developed the basic prototype – done!
